Ulisse ed Enea sono stati qui, sulle nostre coste, il primo per cercare riparo sotto l’ala protettrice di Circe, il secondo per assecondare la volontà degli dei che avevano assegnato a lui il compito di gettare le fondamenta della capitale del mondo, Roma.

Ulysses and Aeneas were here, on our shores, the former to seek shelter under the protective wing of Circe, the latter to comply with the will of the gods who had assigned him the task of laying the foundations of the capital of the world, Rome.

L’umanità è quella che una sorte benigna ha trasferito a piene mani in questa terra stretta tra l’Appennino e il mare, favorendo la contaminazione dei popoli e delle culture, regalando a questo spicchio di pianura la possibilità di rappresentare compiutamente l’idea di Mediterraneo che oggi è tornata al centro della geopolitica, della storia che accompagna lo sviluppo dell’Europa intesa nell’accezione dei padri fondatori dell’Unione, gli stessi che elaborarono proprio qui, in questa terra, sull’isola di Ventotene, il Manifesto da cui ha preso le mosse il disegno dell’Europa Unita.

L’idea della necessità che abbiamo di stordirci di bellezza è dentro un tempo in cui ci si ammala, in cui si torna a fare la guerra, in cui non è più certo neanche il pane. La bellezza è costruire le cattedrali, fare cose ardite anche davanti a Dio.

A motherland where every myth is feminine: Circe, but also Mater Matuta, Queen Camilla, the Beautiful Nymph, Juno Lucina up to Maria Goretti. The idea of the need we have to stun ourselves with beauty is within a time in which we fall ill, in which we go back to war, in which not even bread is certain any more. Beauty is building cathedrals, doing bold things even before God.
